PRJayalakshamma

Smt P.R.JAYALAKSHAMMA (1908-1991) Smt P.R.Jayalakshamma (1908 -1991) , also known as Akkamma, was a well known social worker of the state of Karnataka. She was the vice chairman of the Social welfare board for quite some time. She was closely associated with several welfare organizations like the Abalashrama, Ashakta Poshaka sabha etc. In her last years she ran the school and orphanage started by the Gokulam educational society. She was also a member of the congress party and later the Janata party. She represented jayanagar constituency as a corporator during the late ' 50s and early' 60s. She was also the Deputy mayor of Bangalore during 1963-1964.

Akkamma in her mid ' 50s (~1962)

This Photo was probably taken in ~1969 at the AICC convnetion in Bangalore (LAl Bagh). This is beofre the split in congress. Picture shows Smt Indira Gandhi and Smt P.R.Jayalakshamma. Sri S,Nijalingappa , CM Mysore and the future head of ' Old Congress ' also seen in the picture.

(1) Some of the books written by her (Both in Kannada)

(a) In mid '50s some of the family members including her made a trip to Badari and Kedar. The yatra, those days, was quite ardrous. A considerable portion of the journey had to be done on foot. She wrote a kind of a travelogue after she returned from the trip. The book was called BadariYatre. One of the interesting things is that the treatment was quite modrn. It had a handwritten map (reproduced below) as also the altitude of various places ( These aspects are ignored even in the books published today!)
(b) The second book , published after her death
, is a collection of songs, poems and shlokas from varous folk and mythological sources. It was really a labour of love which kept her occupied in her last 5 years
It is called Kaavya Gaayana Stotramanjari

She was intimately connected with the Gokulam school which was mainly for poor students. It was housed in her home for more than a decade. She was also very much involved with the orphanage which was attached to the school . She managed to get land for both the orphanage (Gopala Niketana) and the school near VidyaPeetha in Bangalore.

Her handwriting ( a letter written to me in US dated 18 Jan 1968)
The bottom part is by my father

Akkmma's family

Akkamma (Jayalakshamma)'s family:
Her father was Sri ShankaraIyer . When she was born in 1908 in Hassan, he was the shirastedar( I think mid level govt official) . Her mother was Lakshamma (also called Belgaum PAti in her later years). . They had 4 children - 2 boys and 2 girls. Jayalakshamma was the youngest in the family. The eldest brother was Sri Subramanyam who was an engineer. He worked in Burma for some time. He passed away in late 1940s. He was married to Smt Saraswati. They had a daughter Malati. Malati married Dr Krishnamoorthy of Madurai. Their daughter is Lata who lives now in Kansas, USA.

Akkamma with her parents (late 1930s) in Dariya Daulat , Sreerangapatna (Will look for a better pik)

Akkamma's other elder brother is S.Ramakrishnan. He was Professor of Mathematics at various places in India ( Secunderabad, Lingaraj College(Belgaum), MTB College (Surat) etc). He was very involved with his subject. In a different age, he probably would have excelled in research in Mathematics. When he went to Surat in his late 40s he learnt Gujerati so that he could teach Mathematics in that language (Gujerat was one of the first states to enforce teaching in the state language) . One remembers he participated for many years in the Running Race for aged (70+) people in Banaglaore and won prizes. He and his friends (including Prof B.S.Madhava Rao, the ex principal of Central College) used to get together in LalBagh every evening to discuss all things under the sun. He passed away in 1990 (15ht August). He married Smt Bhagyalakshmi. Their two children are Vasanthi and Shailakumar (Babu) . MOrea bout them later
